Since 2014, the number of resident applicants filing has increased to a level that surpassed non-residents in the first quarter of the year 2022 giving 54% over non-Indian residents, which will stimulate innovation as well as commercialization in IPR framework. Of the total 19,796 patent applications, 10,706 were filed by Indian applicants whereas 9,090 by non-Indian applicants. There has been nearly a 5X spring in the grant of patent in 2021-22 compared to 2014-15. Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman minister mentioned that 28,000 patents were granted in 2021 compared to 4,000 in 2013-2014
The Panning Momentum
While the growth is substantial and India is moving at steady state, there is still extensive pool between India and United states of America and China. The count of patents in India are still diminutive compared to its counterpart like USA and China in the Top global Innovation Index.
There is a huge disparity, India has 53,053 patent filed in 2021 which is still a snippet of 6.9 Lakh filed by China. Similarly, 54332 patent were filed in the scrape of 530,127, filed by China in 2020.
Among the “Top technology”, Digital and computer technology, Electrical machinery, Medical technology and pharmaceutical were in the top domain in India. For every second patent granted between 2016-2021 in India is related to waste, Green energy or alternative energy. While China has innovations that are more inclined towards Chemical and Electrical engineering, apparatus, energy handling, machine tools and measurements.
For the top players, Qualcomm, Samsung, Huawei are leading the table in Indian on the other side China has Beijing University of Technology, Central South University, Hangzhou Dianzi University.
